The EFSA scientists note that the crucial evaluation of the reproductive assessment by continuous breeding contains calculation and classification errors. This reservation concerns the report's central finding: In evaluating the data from the RACB study, the authors had found that the GM maize group exhibited reduced reproductive performance. Fewer pups were born in the third and fourth litters and they also weighed less than those in the control group fed with conventional maize. According to the GMO Panel minutes, it is not possible to make a final assessment of the study because not all the data is accessible. Detailed information about the breeding scheme and comparative data, such as the normal variation of the parameters examined for the mouse strain used, were also lacking. Historical control data of this kind is usually drawn on in toxicology to enable a better classification of individual results. The information about the feed composition reveals that the GM maize feed contained much higher concentrations of Vitamin A and the *mycotoxin ( * Collective term for a group of highly toxic metabolic products produced by various moulds, including Aspergilli and Fusaria ) zearalenone (ZEA) than the conventional maize feed. Overfeeding with Vitamin A in the mother can lead to severe embryonic abnormalities. The feed: Different groups of trial animals were given different feed diets: One was given a particular variety of GM maize (NK603xMON810), while a second group was given a similar maize variety but without the genetically engineered constructs. The result: In the lifetime and MGS studies, no significant differences were observed between the animals in the different trial groups.
