Landowners annexed vast acreages, producing even greater wealth from the now familiar pattern of small hedged fields. Peasants no longer had plots to grow vegetables nor open commons for grazing their single cow or sheep and pigs. The Inclosure or Enclosure Acts were a series of United Kingdom Acts of Parliament which enclosed open fields and common land in the country. They removed previously existing rights of local people to carry out activities in these areas, such as cultivation, cutting hay, grazing animals or using other resources such as small timber, fish, and turf. "Inclosure" is an old or formal spelling of the word now more usually spelled "enclosure In the 1830s life in villages like Tolpuddle was hard and getting worse. Farm workers could not bear yet more cuts to their pay. Some fought back by smashing the new threshing machines but this brought harsh punishments. In 1834, farm workers in west Dorset formed a trade union. Unions were lawful and growing fast but six leaders of the union were arrested and sentenced to seven years' transportation for taking an oath of secrecy. A massive protest swept across the country. Thousands of people marched through London and many more organised petitions and protest meetings to demand their freedom. Born in 1769 at Moreton House, near Tolpuddle, into a long established family of country gentlemen, James Frampton passionately believed in Church, Constitution, King and Country - and maintenance of the status quo. Squire Frampton framed the Martyrs on a trumped up charge of administering an unlawful oath, using a law applicable to the Navy not workers' rights. He feared trades unionism threatened the power base and wealth of the landed upper classes. Having witnessed the French Revolution, he was determined to suppress any sign of rebellion or opposition, whatever the cause. On 16th of August 1819 at what is now St Peters Square, Manchester, over 60,000 peaceful pro-democracy and anti-poverty protesters gathered at an event which became known as The Peterloo Massacre. An estimated 18 people, (no doubt many more than this died) including a woman and a child, died from Sabre Cuts and Trampling by Mounted Military. Over 700 men, women and children received extremely serious injuries. All in the name of liberty and freedom from poverty. The Massacre came about during a period of immense political tension, bringing mass protests. Fewer than 2% of the population had the vote, and hunger was rife with the disastrous corn laws making bread & other commodities unaffordable to the working class of the day.
